Immediate postpartum care begins as soon as the baby and placenta are born. The midwife will remain in the home to make sure both mother and infant are stable as they adjust to life after birth. This can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours or more, in special circumstances.
Follow up postpartum care typically consists of 6 appointments and begins one day after the birth. For the first week, care is done entirely in the family home. The visits will be personally determined for each woman but it is common to have 2 to 3 visits in the first week. Following, office visits are customary between 2 and 6 weeks as determined by the mother and midwife.
